Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ)

A reliability mechanism that combines forward error correction and retransmission: the receiver attempts to decode using FEC; if decoding fails it requests retransmission and the transmitter sends additional redundancy or repeats, which the receiver can combine with earlier receptions to improve the probability of successful decoding.
