The operation of adjoining a k-handle to an n-manifold M (typically with boundary) by gluing D^k × D^{n-k} to ∂M along an attaching map φ: S^{k-1} × D^{n-k} → ∂M; the result modifies the topology of M by introducing a handle of index k.
