Gate Control Theory

A neurophysiological model proposing that transmission of nociceptive signals to higher centers can be modulated by interneuronal 'gating' mechanisms in the spinal dorsal horn (or trigeminal nucleus for orofacial input), so that non‑nociceptive afferent activity and descending influences alter perceived pain.
