A semantic theory and analytic framework that explains word meaning in terms of frames—structured background knowledge or schematic scenarios that associate lexical units with participant roles, presuppositions and inferential relations; meaning arises from activating the frame and its slots rather than solely from compositional truth‑conditional rules.
