Definition for "exclusionary rule" in Criminal Law
A remedial doctrine that bars the use of unlawfully obtained evidence in the prosecution’s case. It applies where governing law treats the acquisition method as impermissible for evidentiary use. It does not automatically exclude all evidence and commonly turns on the nature of the illegality and recognized exceptions.
