Distributional Hypothesis

The hypothesis that words with similar meanings tend to occur in similar linguistic contexts, so statistical patterns of co-occurrence provide empirical signals that can be used to approximate semantic similarity and build usage-based meaning representations (the basis for distributional semantics and many word-embedding methods).
