Diathesis–Stress Model

A model in psychiatry and psychology that explains onset of psychopathology as the result of an interaction between an underlying vulnerability (diathesis)—which may be genetic, neurobiological, or psychological—and external stressors, such that neither factor alone is necessarily sufficient to produce disorder but their combination raises the probability of clinical syndrome.
