Contact Failure

A mechanical failure mode in which the intended load-transmitting contact between two or more components is interrupted, substantially reduced in area or degraded in effectiveness (by separation, loss of preload, contamination, lubrication breakdown, or gross deformation), producing loss or redistribution of the designed load path.
