A model parameter (commonly k or k_s) expressing the ratio of applied contact pressure to resulting vertical deflection for a foundation element in simplified 'Winkler' spring representations of soil–structure interaction; it represents an aggregate stiffness linking pressure p and settlement w by p = k·w for the chosen foundation geometry and loading condition.
