Chloride-Induced Corrosion

The electrochemical initiation and propagation of corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete caused by the ingress of chloride ions to the reinforcement level that disrupt the passive oxide film on steel; the process leads to rust formation, expansion, cracking of the concrete cover and loss of reinforcement cross‑section and structural capacity.
