Causal Pathway

An ordered sequence of biological, behavioral or environmental events and intermediate steps (mediators) by which a specific exposure or action produces a particular outcome; a causal pathway specifies temporal direction, plausible mechanisms linking steps, and distinguishing mediators from confounders or correlates.
