A continuous-time stochastic process in which individuals or lineages undergo probabilistic birth (increase) and death (decrease) events at specified per-capita rates; the model characterizes population or phylogenetic dynamics through birth and death intensities that may be constant or time-varying and is applied to demographic projections, extinction probabilities, and lineage diversification in
