The set of preparatory steps applied to a physical object (book, pamphlet, map, archival packet, etc.) to stabilize its condition, remove or isolate immediate hazards, document its state, and create the physical and metadata prerequisites required before binding, cosmetic repair, or a conservation treatment that may be irreversible.
