Information & Communication Dictionary
Definition
A cognitive shortcut by which individuals judge the frequency, probability, or importance of events or issues based on how easily instances come to mind—often privileging recent, vivid, or widely reported examples over base rates or systematic evidence; in journalism this produces an outsized influence of salient items on reporters’ and audiences’ perceptions of what is common or important.
