An amphitheatre is a free‑standing, typically circular or oval open-air structure with concentric tiers of seating surrounding a central arena, designed in antiquity to accommodate spectators for spectacles, contests or displays; its architectural form and access arrangements differentiate it from semicircular theatres or elongated circuses.
