A reporting approach in which the preservation of working relationships, ongoing access, or cooperation with powerful sources (officials, corporations, institutions) is given priority over adversarial questioning, independent verification, or investigative scrutiny; the priority affects story selection, framing, sourcing and the depth of critical inquiry.
