A coupled, nonlinear system of partial differential equations describing large‑deflection elastic behavior of thin plates within the von Kármán geometric approximation: transverse deflection w(x,y) is coupled to an Airy stress function φ(x,y) so that in‑plane membrane stresses influence bending and vice versa.
