Definition

The transfer of an infectious agent between hosts that is mediated by an intermediate arthropod vector (for example ticks, mosquitoes, fleas) in which transmission may be mechanical (agent carried externally or on mouthparts) or biological (agent develops or multiplies within the vector), and that depends on vector competence, vector–host contact, and ecological conditions.
