Definition

The biochemical process by which an RNA molecule is synthesized from a DNA template by RNA polymerase and associated factors; it includes initiation at promoters, regulated elongation of the RNA chain in the 5'→3' direction, and termination, producing mRNA, rRNA, tRNA or noncoding RNAs depending on the genomic context and cellular machinery.
