Definition

A technique applied at an egress point (host, router or edge device) that buffers and schedules packet transmissions to enforce a specified traffic profile (rate, burst size or timing)—commonly implemented with token bucket, leaky bucket or pacing—to reduce burstiness and help downstream queue management.
