Definition

The set of coupled processes by which surface phenomena (adsorption, desorption, heterogeneous reaction, surface reconstruction, film formation) and bulk-phase transport or composition (diffusion, convection, bulk reaction, phase change) exchange mass, energy, charge or species and thereby alter each other's rates, distributions, and steady states in a system.
