Definition

The total surface area of a material available for physical or chemical interaction per unit mass or per unit volume, commonly expressed in m2·g−1 or m2·m−3; it quantifies the potential interface between the solid phase (or particle ensemble) and its surroundings and applies to powders, porous solids and dispersed phases where surface phenomena (adsorption, catalysis, interfacial transfer) matter.
