Definition

A continuous, reinforced structural slab that covers the building footprint and transmits vertical and lateral loads to the ground by spreading them over a large area; typically used where soil is compressible, variable in capacity, or where column/footing spacing is dense so that individual footings would cause unacceptable differential settlement.
