Cell‑density–dependent chemical communication mediated by diffusible or contact‑released signal molecules (autoinducers) that alters gene expression across a microbial population in a biofilm, coordinating collective phenotypes such as extracellular matrix production, competence, stress responses, and expression of virulence determinants.
