Definition

A long, thin catheter inserted through a peripheral vein (typically in the upper arm) and advanced so its tip resides in a central venous location to permit prolonged intravenous therapy, administration of irritant or hyperosmolar solutions, and certain hemodynamic monitoring; insertion, tip confirmation and maintenance follow institutional protocols.
