Definition

A loss of structural integrity or alteration of function of a mucosal surface (respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary or other mucosa) that increases epithelial permeability, perturbs host–microbe interactions and mucosal immune regulation, and thereby raises susceptibility to local infection, inflammation or systemic translocation of microbes or antigens.
