Definition

The water content at which a fine-grained soil transitions from plastic to liquid behaviour as defined by standardized laboratory tests (commonly Casagrande cup or cone penetrometer procedures); an empirical index property used in classification and to indicate the soil's consistency and sensitivity to changes in moisture content.
