Definition

The fraction of a link's capacity that is used to carry data during a specified observation interval, typically computed as utilization = carried throughput / nominal capacity. Capacity must be defined (physical PHY rate, provisioned bandwidth, or effective share) and the observation interval stated, since utilization is time‑dependent and sensitive to burstiness and overhead.
