A theoretical model that represents information retrieval as an iterative cognitive process in which a searcher's internal representations (information need, goals, queries, relevance judgments) interact dynamically with system representations (indexing, ranking, interfaces), producing reciprocal updates to the user's mental model and the system-mediated result set.
