Definition

The process by which an infectious agent that normally circulates in non‑human animals is transferred to humans through direct contact, indirect environmental exposure, vectors, food or other routes such that human infection or colonization occurs; zoonotic transmission is an interface phenomenon requiring exposure pathways and sufficient host–pathogen compatibility.
