Stratigraphic excavation is the controlled archaeological method of removing deposits and features in the sequence defined by their stratigraphic relationships so that temporal and spatial order is recorded; it uses context-level recording (single contexts, layers or features), stratigraphic sequencing and plan/section documentation to preserve interpretive information.
