Definition

Out-of-plane instability of a thin structural panel or skin under in-plane compressive stresses in which the panel forms localized wrinkles, waves or fold-like deformations when the applied compressive stress exceeds a critical value determined by panel bending stiffness, geometry and boundary supports.
