Definition

A set of physical operations or spontaneous reorganizations by which a mixture of components separates into two or more coexisting phases (e.g., immiscible liquid–liquid layers, vapor–liquid, solid–liquid precipitate) because of differences in density, solubility, volatility, interfacial tension or thermodynamic affinity.
