Definition

The reordering or transposition of segments (phonemes, syllables) within a word that yields variant pronunciations or forms by swapping the linear positions of adjacent or non‑adjacent elements; metathesis can be a synchronic alternation in morphology or a diachronic pathway of historical sound change.
