Definition

A turbulence modeling approach in which the governing Navier–Stokes equations are spatially (or spatially–temporally) filtered so that the large, energy‑containing eddies are resolved on the computational grid while the smaller, subgrid‑scale motions are represented by a subgrid‑scale (SGS) model; LES reduces modeling to the unresolved scales while capturing time‑dependent coherent structures expl
