Definition

An empirical interspecific scaling relationship stating that an animal's resting (basal) metabolic rate (BMR) scales approximately as body mass to the three‑quarters power (BMR ∝ M3/4) across many animal taxa; the relationship is approximate, applies to whole‑organism basal or resting metabolic rate measured under standard conditions, and does not specify a single universal mechanistic cause.
