Definition

A technique that estimates metabolic energy expenditure by measuring rates of oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2) and applying stoichiometric conversions (for example the Weir equation) that translate gas exchange into energy units, under conditions of steady aerobic metabolism.
