The assemblage of microorganisms—bacteria, archaea, viruses and eukaryotes—that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract, whose collective composition and metabolic activity participate in digestion of dietary components, production and transformation of metabolites, modulation of host immune and epithelial functions, and interactions with drugs and xenobiotics.
