Definition

Inserting a time interval—either silent (zero symbols) or a known symbol sequence—between consecutive transmitted symbols so that delayed multipath components from one symbol decay before the next begins, thereby reducing inter‑symbol interference and allowing the receiver to separate symbols reliably.
