Definition

A biomechanical model stating that mechanical tension and compression transmitted through the connective tissue fibers of the periodontal ligament (PDL) and adjacent gingival fibers convey applied forces to alveolar bone, initiating cellular signals that produce site-specific bone resorption and formation and thereby permit tooth displacement.
