Definition

The mechanical benefit produced when a circumferential band of restorative material engages at least a portion of sound coronal tooth structure around the cervical margin of a prepared tooth, thereby distributing functional and parafunctional stresses away from the root–restoration junction and increasing resistance to fracture, debonding, or catastrophic root failure of the restored unit.
