Volume increase of moisture‑sensitive soils (commonly soils rich in swelling clay minerals such as smectites) when they gain water, producing vertical heave and lateral pressures that can uplift, distort and damage foundations, pavements, and buried utilities. Swelling is reversible with drying but may be seasonal or triggered by changes in moisture regime.
