Una curva algebraica proyectiva lisa de género uno junto con un punto racional distinguido (el origen); sobre un cuerpo de característica distinta de 2 y 3 se suele presentar mediante una cúbica de Weierstrass y^2 = x^3 + ax + b, y posee una ley de grupo abeliana natural en sus puntos racionales.
