Definition

A stable‑isotope technique for measuring average total energy expenditure (TEE) in free‑living subjects over multiple days by administering water labelled with deuterium (2H) and oxygen‑18 (18O) and determining isotope elimination rates from body water; the difference between elimination rates is used to calculate CO2 production and thus energy expenditure after conversion assumptions.
