A preventive professional dental procedure consisting of mechanical and sometimes polishing removal of supragingival soft biofilm, plaque, and extrinsic stains, and limited removal of superficial calculus, performed to maintain oral hygiene and prevent progression of gingival inflammation in patients without established periodontitis.
