Für einen Ring oder eine ähnliche algebraische Struktur mit multiplikativer Eins ist die Charakteristik die kleinste positive ganze Zahl n mit n·1 = 0 (die n-fache Summe von 1 ist das additive Nullelement), oder 0, falls eine solche positive ganze Zahl nicht existiert; sie misst die additive Torsion der Eins.
