Ein makroskopisches Verkehrsflussmodell, das Fahrzeugdichte ρ(x,t) als konservierte Skalare behandelt, die eine hyperbolische Erhaltungsgleichung ρ_t + q(ρ)_x = 0 erfüllt, wobei der Fluss q(ρ) = ρ v(ρ) durch ein Fundamentaldiagramm gegeben ist, das Dichte und mittlere Geschwindigkeit verknüpft; es beschreibt kinematische Wellen, Schocks und Rarefaktionen im Verkehr.
