Ein ökologisches und evolutionäres Prinzip, das besagt, dass Individuen und Arten nur einen begrenzten Vorrat an Ressourcen (Energie, Zeit, Nährstoffe) haben, der auf konkurrierende Lebensfunktionen (Wachstum, Fortpflanzung, Erhaltung, Abwehr) verteilt werden muss und dadurch Trade-offs in der Merkmalsausprägung und Lebensgeschichtsstrategien erzeugt.
