Für eine hermitesche (oder symmetrische) Matrix A und einen von Null verschiedenen Vektor x ist der Rayleigh-Quotient R(x) = (x* A x)/(x* x), ein Skalar, der den Wert der quadratischen Form pro Einheitsquadratnorm von x angibt; bei komplexen Vektoren steht x* für die konjugiert-transponierte.
