Definition

For a mixture of non‑reacting gases occupying the same volume at a uniform temperature, the total pressure equals the sum of the partial pressures of each component gas: P_total = Σ p_i. Each partial pressure p_i equals the pressure that gas would exert if it alone occupied the container at the same temperature.
